More than 1500 years have passed since the juvenile water of Borjomi is rejuvenating us. Its journey begins at a depth of 8,000 meters underground, in the Caucasus Mountains, where it is enhanced with more than 60 unique minerals as it flows to the surface.
Borjomi&rsquo;s mineral water is considered juvenile because of a different hydrogen isotope correlation. This distinguishing feature sets Borjomi water apart from other mineral water.

Mineral water that rises from the earth in the depths of the Borjomi Gorge, surrounded by mountains, was first discovered by a wounded deer that entered the water and came out completely healed. History

History of 130 years

The history of Borjomi begins with a legend, according to which the live water was first discovered by a wounded deer. The water healed the deer, and a hunter who witnessed the miracle tasted the water for himself, felt its rejuvenating power, and shared it with others.
According to historical sources, the mineral waters of the Borjomi gorge date back to the first millennium AD, as revealed by the seven stone baths discovered at the beginning of the 20th century. Archeological findings show that in those times, Borjomi water was valued for drinking as well as bathing.However, this place was abandoned because of the 16th-17th century wars, and unfortunately, its valuable sources were forgotten.

The discovery of Borjomi

The Borjomi waters were re-discovered thanks to the soldiers camped near Borjomi. In 1829, they were the ones who came across the mineral springs in the forest on the right bank of the Borjomula River. After tasting the water, the commander, delighted with the discovery, even ordered it to be surrounded by stone.
And so the studies of its unique mineral blend and healing properties began

The early period

By 1841, the word about &ldquo;Borjomi&rsquo;s&rdquo; healing properties was already spread worldwide. People visited the waters from different points of the world, and the natural properties of &ldquo;Borjomi&rdquo; did not disappoint the guests.
As the number of visitors grew, so did the vision of turning Borjomi into a resort, and so, by 1842, the efforts to improve and develop the city&rsquo;s infrastructure began

In 1846, the resort began its transformation and improvement. By 1850, a mineral water park was established, and four years later, in 1854, the foundation was laid for the construction of the first bottling factory

By 1862, Borjomi started to receive even greater attention as the resort began to develop, similar to the famous European resort of Vichy.
While it took 8-9 hours to travel by phaeton from the capital to Borjomi before, along with the construction of the resort, the Khashuri-Borjomi road was opened, significantly shortening this long journey.
By 1890, the first bottling factory was founded in Borjomi mineral water park, followed by the opening of the first glass factory in 1896. By then, the factory could already produce 10-12 million bottles a year.
The improvement of Borjomi also contributed to the development of the neighboring areas. In 1899, the first electricity station was built, which supplied electricity not only to the Borjomi gorge but to three bordering regions, as well.
Rapid changes also improved the water quality. In 1900, a specially invited scientist F. Moldenhauer developed a method by which the physical and chemical properties of bottled mineral water could be preserved. This discovery of water carbonation made exporting Borjomi mineral water possible.
The production process was also simplified. Until 1950, the water was bottled by hand, and in 1904, the process became partly mechanized.
By 1854, only 1,350 bottles could be bottled, by 1905, this number had reached 320,000, and in 1913, it exceeded the then-record figure of 9 million bottles.
The opportunity to export the water outside Georgia&rsquo;s borders quickly brought Borjomi a well-deserved interest and approval. The brand became a frequent guest of international exhibitions and received worldwide awards:
In 1907, Borjomi was awarded a diploma in Belgium
In 1909, it won a gold medal in Russia
In 1911, it was awarded the Order of Merit in Dresden, Germany
Both the mineral water and the resort progressed at such a pace that in 1921, Borjomi was granted the status of a city

Development period

In 1953, a new modern factory N1 was built near the first bottling plant, further improving production. By 1961, Borjomi was already sold in 15 countries worldwide, including USA, France, and Austria, and the production number exceeded 423 000 bottles.
In 1969, the new factory N2 was built, and as a result, in the 1980s-1990s, the all-time production record was broken - 400 million bottles sold a year. &ldquo;Borjomi&rdquo; held the status of the most popular water in the entire Soviet Union. Not a single important meeting was held without it

1953

Later decades of the XX century

In 1995, A new era for mineral water began &mdash; Georgian Glass &amp;amp; Mineral Water Co. N.V. restored the production of Borjomi, and along with the modernization, the numbers slowly started to increase again.
In 2004 the bottling factories moved to the European storage and production line.
By 2005, production numbers almost returned to normal, reaching 200 million bottles produced. The rapid development attracted international attention again, and in 2007, Bureau Veritas - the world-famous auditing company, awarded Borjomi with the ISO 22000 international certificate for risk-free and safe production.
In 2017, &ldquo;Borjomi&rdquo; created an innovative product for mineral water &mdash; packaging in a 0.33-liter can.Continuous improvements have made &ldquo;Borjomi&rdquo; an international brand. Thanks to all this, today, Borjomi is known in more than 40 countries worldwide as a real treasure of Georgian nature, making every Georgian proud. In 2019 Borjomi introduced a new design. Borjomi&rsquo;s famous symbol became more modern and the brand color &mdash; Georgia green became more notable. Even now, the new style captures Borjomi&rsquo;s unique and bold nature.
Borjomi launched a new communication strategy in 2021 called ,,Live Water, Live Legend&rdquo;. As exports to new countries increased, the goal was to highlight Borjomi&rsquo;s Georgian heritage and distinctive features. This strategy continued with the new 2023 campaign, which tells the legend of how Borjomi was discovered and takes us through several eras to the present day.Continuous improvements have made &ldquo;Borjomi&rdquo; an international brand. Today, Borjomi is known in more than 40 countries worldwide as a real treasure of Georgian nature, making every Georgian proud.
